Beyond grades: Why education must focus on real learning

As artificial intelligence changes how students access information, education faces a growing need to move beyond exam performance towards deeper understanding, critical thinking and lifelong learning

A student completes an assignment using artificial intelligence, scores well in an examination, and moves on to the next chapter. Yet ask the same student to explain the concept, apply it to a real-life situation, or justify why it works, and the confidence often fades.

This is no longer an isolated classroom experience; it reflects one of the challenges facing education today. According to UNESCO’s Global Education Monitoring Report, nearly 70% of children in developing countries cannot read and understand a simple text by the age of ten. The issue is no longer only access to information. It is transforming information into meaningful learning.

Studying is not the same as learning

Education is an important part of a student’s development. It enables students to prepare for examinations, refresh concepts and develop discipline. However, self-study is not a substitute for instruction.

Learning is not just about reciting facts or completing chapters. It includes understanding concepts, asking questions, making connections, solving problems and applying knowledge in new situations. However, many educational systems continue to emphasise completing the syllabus and performing well in examinations as a means of achieving better marks, rather than focusing on understanding. This can result in students scoring well in school without necessarily developing the desire to learn or the ability to think beyond the classroom.

The AI era calls for deeper learning

Artificial intelligence has changed the way students access information. Facts, formulas and even complete assignments can now be produced in a matter of seconds.

When information is readily available, educators need to place greater emphasis on skills that technology cannot easily replace, such as critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, ethical decision-making and problem-solving. The future may depend less on simply knowing answers and more on knowing how to ask relevant questions and use knowledge responsibly.

Learning must be active, not passive

Numerous studies have examined how students learn through active engagement in the learning process. Discussion, experiments, projects, hands-on activities, reflection and collaborative problem-solving can support deeper understanding than passive listening or rote memorisation alone.

Children have opportunities to understand and remember what they are learning when they are encouraged to explore and discover, make mistakes and test ideas. These experiences can also help develop confidence, communication skills, resilience and independent thinking, qualities that are relevant to higher education and the workplace.

Personalised learning is the way forward

Each child has individual learning needs and preferences. Some learn through observation; others through discussion, exploration or practical activities. Recognising these differences can help make education more inclusive and responsive.

If well planned, online learning can support a personalised approach by enabling students to learn at their own pace, revisit challenging concepts, receive timely feedback and participate in interactive learning rather than passive screen time. The purpose is not simply to move classes online, but to improve the learning experience so that students remain curious, engaged and involved in their own learning.

Preparing students for life

While achievement will continue to be an important component of education, it should not be its only goal.

Education also needs to help develop people who are curious enough to ask questions, confident enough to express their thoughts and ideas, adaptable enough to respond to change and willing to continue learning throughout their lives. With ongoing changes in the world, education needs to go beyond preparing students for examinations.

Its success can also be measured by how well it helps young people think, solve problems that arise in their lives and continue learning after they leave school.
