iPhone 18 Pro Max to Keep Similar Design Ahead of Apple’s 2027 Overhaul; Know Why

If the leaks regarding the iPhone 18 Pro Max—a familiar design, the same screen size, and barely noticeable visual changes—have left you feeling somewhat underwhelmed, it’s not just you. And, judging by everything reported so far, it’s no coincidence. Apple is apparently deliberately saving its biggest design overhaul in years for a specific, symbolic moment—and that moment isn't this coming September.

This has happened before—in almost exactly the same way

Apple has a clear precedent for this pattern, and it’s worth understanding before dismissing this year’s iPhone as boring. In 2017, to mark the iPhone's 10th anniversary, Apple launched the iPhone X alongside the standard iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. The X model removed the Home button, introduced Face ID, and established the design language that every subsequent iPhone has followed in one way or another.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple plans to repeat this exact strategy for the iPhone's 20th anniversary. The original iPhone was announced in January 2007 and went on sale in June of that same year; technically, therefore, the 20th anniversary falls on June 29, 2027. However, just as Apple did not rush the launch of the iPhone X to coincide with June 2017, the 20th-anniversary model is expected to arrive following Apple's usual September schedule—that is, in the fall of 2027.

It appears Apple's roadmap has been in the works for years.

Gurman has outlined Apple's plan in considerable detail: September 2025 brought the redesigned iPhone 17 Pro and the all-new iPhone Air. A foldable iPhone is slated for release in September 2026. September 2027 is when the real event takes place: a special 20th-anniversary commemorative iPhone, based on what is described as Apple's most significant redesign since the iPhone X.

Viewed in the context of that roadmap, the relatively conservative design of the iPhone 18 Pro Max makes more sense. It falls in the transitional year between two truly revolutionary launches—this year's foldable iPhone and next year's anniversary redesign—precisely the kind of year where Apple has historically focused on internal improvements rather than an aesthetic overhaul.

What Apple is reportedly preparing for 2027 instead

Rumours regarding the 20th-anniversary iPhone paint a truly spectacular picture—at least on paper. Reports describe an all-glass design featuring curved glass that wraps around all four edges of the device and a "quad-curved" display free of any cutouts, made possible by fully integrating Face ID and the front-facing camera beneath the screen. Additionally, Apple is said to be reviving a shelved project—internally known as "Project Bongo"—to replace physical buttons with solid-state haptic versions; their reliability has reportedly already been verified, even when used with gloves or wet hands.

A significant leap in camera technology is also expected, featuring a new sensor that utilises LOFIC technology, capable of delivering up to 20 stops of dynamic range. Regarding the display, rumours suggest Apple will source a new OLED panel from Samsung manufactured using "Colour Filter on Encapsulation" technology; this eliminates the polarising layer to boost brightness and efficiency while simultaneously reducing reflections. There is also talk of "Ceramic Shield 2.0" and enhanced water resistance—an advantage stemming partly from the reduction in moving mechanical parts following the removal of physical buttons.

According to the leaker Fixed Focus Digital, Apple has already begun ramping up orders for vapor chamber cooling components intended for both the 2026 foldable iPhone and the 2027 anniversary model; this indicates that manufacturing preparations are underway more than a year ahead of the launch.

However, it is worth noting that some of the most ambitious features entail engineering challenges that have yet to be resolved. A report suggests that curved-screen technology could be rolled out in two phases: the 2027 version might exhibit some distortion and brightness loss at the edges of the curve, paving the way for a more refined version in 2028.

Not everyone thinks waiting until 2027 is worth it

It is worth considering a valid counterpoint rather than simply building hype around next year's phone. Dipanjan Chatterjee, Vice President and Principal Analyst at Forrester, has described the anniversary redesign strategy as a "double-edged sword." He worries that announcing a radically redesigned iPhone two years in advance risks further extending an upgrade cycle that has already slowed significantly—especially since Apple Intelligence has yet to deliver the compelling, must-have AI experience that would convince owners of older models to upgrade early.

Chatterjee also raised a valid point regarding buyer behaviour during this period: some customers might reasonably decide to buy a cheaper iPhone now—such as the iPhone 16e—and simply wait out the next two years, rather than spending a large sum on what is essentially a transitional generation.

What this really means if you’re thinking about buying the iPhone 18 Pro Max

If your main disappointment with the iPhone 18 Pro Max is that it feels familiar, that is a reasonable interpretation of where Apple currently stands in its product cycle—but it is not a sign that the phone lacks significant improvements. The A20 Pro chip, the variable-aperture camera, and Apple’s first high-end, in-house modem represent genuine, substantial upgrades, even if they are housed in a design Apple has deliberately chosen not to change for the time being.

Ultimately, the decision comes down to patience. If a radically new design matters more to you than this year’s internal improvements, the honest answer—based on the company’s own roadmap—is that the design you’re waiting for won’t arrive until September 2027. Deciding whether it’s worth sticking with your current phone for another two years is a strictly personal choice, but the reason behind this year’s Pro Max model’s appearance is no longer a mystery.
