Godavari Flood Levels Near Third Warning Mark; Mulugu Administration on High Alert

WARANGAL: The flood situation in the Godavari river is intensifying due to heavy rains in the upstream regions, with water levels steadily rising. At Ramannagudem, the river has crossed the second warning level and is now nearing the third danger mark, prompting the district administration to remain on high alert. District Collector Borkhade Hemant Sahadeva Rao has urged residents in the catchment areas to stay vigilant.

As of 2 pm on Friday, the water level at Ramannagudem was recorded at 75.47 feet (16.97 metres). The first warning level is 73.32 feet, while the second warning level stands at 74.32 feet. With the river already flowing above the second warning mark, officials are closely monitoring the situation as it approaches the third warning level of 75.82 feet (17.32 metres).

The Collector stated that the Sammakka Sagar Project at Tupakulagudem is receiving an inflow of 14,03,500 cusecs of floodwater as of 2 pm, and an equal quantity is being discharged downstream through spillway gates. The barrage is currently operating under free-flow conditions.

With rising water levels, there is a possibility of backwater impact in low-lying areas and streams, including Jampannavagu. Officials in Kannayigudem, Eturunagaram, Mangapet, Vajedu, and Venkatapuram mandals have been directed to maintain heightened vigilance.

Authorities have been instructed to keep a close watch on villages that were affected by floods in the past and to keep rehabilitation centres ready for immediate evacuation if required. The Collector emphasised that basic facilities such as drinking water, food, electricity, and medical services must be ensured at these centres.

Residents have been advised to avoid visiting rivers, streams, and tanks for activities such as fishing or swimming. They have also been cautioned to remain indoors for the next two to three days unless it is absolutely necessary to step out. Officials have been directed to issue warnings through drum announcements in villages and maintain special night patrols.

In case of emergencies, the public has been asked to contact the district’s 24-hour toll-free helpline at 1800-425-7109. The Collector assured that officials will respond promptly to complaints and take up relief measures. Departments including Revenue, Police, Irrigation, Panchayat Raj, Medical, and Electricity have been instructed to remain available at headquarters and continuously monitor the situation.
