Veldi Hariprasad weaves a 5.5-metre saree that fits inside a matchbox, showcasing the speed and finesse of traditional handloom craftsmanship

Rajanna- Sircilla: On the eve of National Handloom Day, Sircilla handloom weaver Veldi Hariprasad demonstrated extraordinary craftsmanship by weaving a complete saree on a traditional handloom in just 170 minutes (2 hours and 50 minutes). The feat highlighted that skilled handloom weaving can rival the speed of powerloom production. The saree measures 5.5 metres in length and 45 inches in width while weighing only 175 grams. In a remarkable display of precision, Hariprasad folded the finely woven saree and placed it inside a regular matchbox before dignitaries, drawing widespread appreciation. The lightweight saree was created using around 10,500 weft threads and 1,500 warp threads. Completing such intricate work in less than three hours reflects the exceptional skill, patience and dedication of Sircilla’s handloom artisans.

Hariprasad’s achievement has been hailed as a proud moment for the region’s weaving community, with many expressing hope that the unique feat will earn recognition in international record books while promoting Sircilla’s rich handloom heritage worldwide.
