Today is National Watermelon Day: A water-rich fruit with nutritional benefits
Explore the powerful health properties of watermelon (Citrullus lanatus). Learn how its high water content, lycopene antioxidants, and vitamins support daily hydration.
Rich in water and naturally sweet, watermelon is a refreshing fruit that can support hydration while providing important nutrients. Watermelon is a popular fruit known for its refreshing taste, juicy texture and high water content. Its bright red flesh, green rind and sweet flavour make it a favourite among people of all ages. Scientifically known as Citrullus lanatus, watermelon belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family, which also includes cucumber, pumpkin and gourds.
One of watermelon’s most notable features is its high water content. This makes it a refreshing food choice, particularly when the body needs to replace fluids. However, water is not the only component that makes watermelon interesting from a nutritional perspective.
Watermelon contains nutrients such as vitamin C and vitamin A, along with small amounts of minerals including potassium. It also contains lycopene, a natural plant compound that gives the red flesh its colour. Lycopene is an antioxidant that has been studied for its potential role in supporting overall health.
Although watermelon tastes sweet, it is relatively low in calories because much of the fruit consists of water. It can be eaten on its own or added to fruit salads, smoothies and other dishes. The fruit can also be served chilled as a refreshing snack.
